I know that there has been some posts on this already . But I am leaving a web site for everyone to go to so that everyone can use the shopping bags . Here is the site link    freeshoppingbags.com

I hope everyone goes there and get their free bag and also order more . I keep my 7 bags in the trunk of our car at all times . Since you never know when you want to shop !

Thank you for sharing!

Waaayyyyyy back in the hippie days and ecology, etc. they came out with canvas bags for shopping.  I've been using them for years - they wash well in the washer and they are quite sturdy.  I'm designing a pattern for them as well - I want to make some with changes for different things.

I like to use the plastic bags from the store for meats - this way they don't leak on my beige bags.  But with one pattern I've got, I won't have to worry if anything leaks or leaves a stain!

If you are lucky enough to find a store that still has paper bags - they are much smaller and much thinner than the ones used 35 - 50 years ago.  And the plastic ones don't hold anything and many have a hole cut in the bottom or side for some odd reason.  The plastic is so thin you have to double or triple them - still no guarantee they will hold up anyway!

Many stores have "bags" for 99 cents or a dollar - still too small for many things and you would have to buy quite a bit to use for a week's grocery shopping.

You do have a point on that , the shopping bags of today holds very little that is why I had to buy 7 of them to use . I would love to know where to buy some of the larger bags that are just as heavy duty as these are . So if anyone knows where the large canvas shopping bags can be found please let me know . I do use the ones I have since I buy for only the two of us . But when our children come to visit I would love to have a few of the large bags to use then . And thanks KWC for the reply !!

I purchased 6 from a supermarket - 2 of them I had to re-sew - so now I'm re-sewing all of them - they sure weren't made very well.  The material is not exactly the best - it won't last as long as my canvas bags did.  And with these new bags - a few cans of something, a bunch of bananas and the bag is full.

We have the Save-A-Lot and Aldi chains up here as well - and they don't give bags - you can buy bags - plastic at one and thin paper at another - but you're right back to square one.

So you grab whatever boxes you can after they have cut them all up for display.  And they aren't good for anything except carrying your groceries in the house - so now you've got all this extra trash to put out.  That is why I've decided to make my own pattern and do my own.  Larger bags can hold much more and well-made ones can take the weight of sugar, flour, etc.

I have a plastic milk crate in the trunk that I keep them all in.  Soon I'll need 2 crates!

We get bags here too.  The cloth ones cost about 30p and last for ages.  They call them bags for life.  If a bag breaks, you can take it back and get a replacement free.
