Gas or Charcoal?
We have been bbqing for as long as I can remember. This is the favorite way of cooking in Africa. We always cooked on coals, there is nothing like food cooked on ccoals. I was wondering how other members like doing their BBq's

BBQ
I have been barbarqueing for 40 some years and I find if you take the time to heat a gas grill and if you want to use wood with it you can make food on a gas grill just as tasty as on a charcoal grill. It just takes a little common sense.

Gas or charcoal
Acually I am set up to do both gas and wood and charcoal , I like gas if I want to fix things fast and easy but if I want to do BBQ the old school way I use wood and charcoal in combination . I am 48 years young and learned by grilling and BBQ skills from my father as he did from his, My wife Niki and I also have our own BBQ competiton team named Squeel Appeal we started last year in a few comps doing mostly Boston Butts (pulled pork) , pork ribs, and chicken. The first year we were in the back of the pack finishing in 38 place out of 40 to 50 teams, this year we average in the top 5 finish spots.

Hi ! I have to agree with awe7747 . If you get that grill hot enought , with just a touch of wood if you wanted , it cooks just as good as a char. grill . But I also agree with WalterSC . See my hubby does the BBQing on the gas grill while I do the BBQing on the charcoal because that was how I was taught to grill. Now if I was not afraid to use the gas grill I prob woud use it alot more . But I saw my poor hubby singe his arm hairs more than once ! So nope I wll stick to the charcoal LOL ! If you have some recipes where you cook just on the coals I woud like to try it that way ! I have never do that way .
Hey Awe7747 Long time no hear LOL .
Just remember to enjoy all the fun of BBQING any way you want too !

A 40 gallon drum cut in half, if you can find one these days, some wood and paper to get a fire going, some charcoal, some good marinaded meat, and salads and you have a great bbq. I grew up in Africa, where bbq's were/are a regular thing. There is nothing like the smoky taste of coal or wood cooked meat.
Granny Cheryl, I'll dig out some coal cooking recipes and put them in. I must just remember to do it.

Charcoal
I like charcoal the best because of the taste. Smoked is good to though. I guess i've always had this fear of running out of propane before my stuff was done. I know you can put the wood on either and get that smokey taste. Nothing compares to food on the grill though especially in the winter time, I think it's even better. I remember my son in the boy scouts, we baked brownies. Used a cast iron pot with lid. set the pot on top of some hot coals and put them around the edge of the lid. In about thirty minutes we had brownies, I actually impressed myself because it worked great and I felt like I accomplished something too. to me there ain't nothing better than bbqued ribs. You know the kind that gets sauce from one ear to the other. That's a perfect rib right there, I don't care who you are.
