Irish Soda Bread



4 cups all-purpose flour

4 tablespoons white sugar

1 teaspoon baking soda

1 tablespoon baking powder

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 cup butter, softened

1 cup buttermilk

1 egg, beaten

1. Preheat oven to 375ºF. Lightly grease a large baking sheet.



2. Mix together the first 5 ingredients. Cut butter into flour

mixture until combined.



3. Stir in buttermilk and egg.



4. Turn dough out onto a lightly floured surface and knead slightly.



5. Form dough into a round and place on prepared baking sheet.



6. In a small bowl, combine 1/4 cup melted butter with 1/4 cup of

buttermilk; brush loaf with this mixture. Use a sharp knife to cut

an 'X' into the top of the loaf.



7. Bake for 40-50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the

center
of the loaf comes out clean. Brush the loaf with the butter

mixture a couple of times while it bakes.
