These are a simple ways to change the flavor and the color of a plain rice.
Cook-ins
Chicken or beef broth or bouillion for all of the water.
Chicken consomme diluted as directed on can for all of the water.
Apple juice for half of the water.
Orange juice for half of the water.
Pineapple juice for half of the water.
Tomato juice for half of the water.
Try a creamy soup for a change of pace like cream of mushroom, cream of chicken, etc.
For color, flavor or just for a change.
Stir-ins
Prepare 3 cups of rice and stir in one of the following.
Almond: 1/2 cup slivered almonds browned in 2 tbsps of butter.
Bacon: 4 slices bacon, diced, crisply fried and drained.
Browned butter: 1/4 cup butter heated until light brown.
Carrot: 1/2 cup shredded carrot and 2 tbsps butter, melted.
Dill: 2-4 tbsps snipped dill.
Lemon: 2 tsps lemon juice and 2 tbsps butter, melted.
Marmalade: 1/4 cup marmalade and 2 tbsps butter, melted.
Mushroom: 1 can (3 to 4 oz ) sliced mushrooms or mushroom stems and pieces, drained, heated in 2 tbsps of butter.
Olive: 1/2 cup chopped ripe or pimento-stuffed olives or 10 pitted ripe or pimento-stuffed olives, sliced.
Onion: 2 tbsps minced onion cooked and stirred in 2 tbsps butter until tender.
Parsley: 2-4 tbsps snipped parsley.
Dont forget to try some different spices like curry, saffron, etc.
