In a word...
DATE: 06/04/2008 23:35:09 / MOOD: happy

One day, there was a blind man sitting on the steps of a building
with a hat by his feet and a sign that read:

“I am blind, please help.”

A creative publicist was walking by and stopped to observe.  He saw that the blind man had only a few coins in his hat.

He dropped in more coins and, without asking for permission, took the sign and rewrote it.

He returned the sign to the blind man and left.  That afternoon the publicist returned to the blind man and noticed that his hat was full of bills and coins.

The blind man recognized his footsteps and asked if it was he who had rewritten his sign and wanted to know what he had written on it.

The publicist responded: “Nothing that was not true. I just wrote the
message a little differently.” He smiled and went on his way.

The new sign read: “Today is Spring and I cannot see it.”

Learning what to say changes everything.

Things We Keep
DATE: 05/11/2008 22:43:30 / MOOD: full of life

Their marriage was good, their dreams focused. Their best friends lived barely a wave away.

I can see them now, Dad in trousers, t-shirt and a hat and Mom in a house dress, lawn mower in one hand, and dish-towel in the other. It was the time for fixing things. A curtain rod, the kitchen radio, screen door, the oven door, the hem in a dress. Things we keep...

It was a way of life, and sometimes it made me crazy. All that re-fixing,
eating, renewing, I wanted just once to be wasteful.

Waste meant affluence. Throwing things away meant you knew there'd always be more.

But then my mother died, and on that clear summer's night, in the warmth of the hospital room, I was struck with the pain of learning that sometimes there isn't any more.

Sometimes, what we care about most gets all used up and goes away...never to return. So... While we have it... it's best we love it... And care for it.... And fix it when it's broken..... And heal it when it's sick.

This is true... For marriage... And old cars.... And children with bad report cards..... Dogs and cats with bad hips.... And aging parents.... And grandparents. We keep them because they are worth it, because we are worth it. Some things we keep. Like a best friend that moved away or a classmate we grew up with.

There are just some things that make life important, like people we know who are special.... And so, we keep them close!

Happy Mother's Day!

Anger Management :-P
DATE: 11/23/2034 12:10:39 / MOOD: happy

You know when you occasionally have a really bad day, and you just need to take it out on someone, don't take it out on someone you know, take it out on someone you don't know.

I was sitting at my desk when I remembered a phone call I'd forgotten to make I found the number and dialed it. A man answered, saying 'Hello.'

I politely said, 'This is Chris. Could I please speak with Robyn Carter?'

Suddenly a manic voice yelled out in my ear, 'Get the right f *** ing number!' and the phone was slammed down on me.

I couldn't believe that anyone could be so rude.

When I tracked down Robyn's correct number to call her, I found that I had accidentally transposed the last two digits. After hanging up with her, I decided to call the 'wrong' number again.

When the same guy answered the phone, I yelled, 'You're an asshole!' and hung up. I wrote his number down with the word 'asshole' next to it, and put it in my desk drawer.

Every couple of weeks, when I was paying bills or had a really bad day, I'd call him up and yell, 'You're an asshole!'

It always cheered me up.

Then Caller ID was introduced, I thought my therapeutic 'asshole' calling would have to stop.

So, I called his number and said, 'Hi, this is John Smith from the telephone company. I'm calling to see if you're familiar with our Caller ID program?'

He yelled, 'NO!' and slammed down the phone.

I quickly called him back and said, 'That's because you're an asshole!' and hung up.

One day I was at the store, getting ready to pull into a parking spot. Some guy in a black BMW cut me off and pulled into the spot I had patiently waited for. I hit the horn and yelled that I'd been waiting for that spot, but the idiot ignored me.

I noticed a 'For Sale' sign in his back window, so I wrote down his number.

A couple of days later, right after calling the first asshole (I had his number on speed dial), I thought that I'd better call the BMW asshole, too.

I said, 'Is this the man with the black BMW for sale?'

He said, 'Yes, it is.'

I asked, 'Can you tell me where I can see it?'

He said, 'Yes, I live at 34 Oaktree Blvd, in Fairfax. It's a yellow duplex, and the car's parked right out in front.'

I asked, 'What's your name?'

He said, 'My name is Don Hansen.'

I asked, 'When's a good time to catch you, Don?'

He said, 'I'm home every evening after five.'

I said, 'Listen, Don, can I tell you something?'

He said, 'Yes?'

I said, 'Don, you're an asshole!'

Then I hung up, and added his number to my speed dial, too.

Now, when I had a problem, I had two assholes to call.

Then I came up with an idea. I called asshole #1.

He said, 'Hello.'

I said, 'You're an asshole!' (But I didn't hang up.)

He asked, 'Are you still there?'

I said, 'Yeah.'

He screamed, 'Stop calling me.'

I said, 'Make me.'

He asked, 'Who are you?'

I said, 'My name is Don Hansen.'

He said, 'Yeah? Where do you live?'

I said, 'Asshole, I live at 34 Oaktree Blvd, in Fairfax, a yellow duplex, I have a black Beamer parked in front.'

He said, 'I' m coming over right now, Don. And you had better start saying your prayers.'

I said, 'Yeah, like I'm really scared, asshole,' and hung up.

Then I called Asshole #2.

He said, 'Hello?'

I said, 'Hello, asshole.'

He yelled, 'If I ever find out who you are...'

I said, 'You'll what?'

He exclaimed, 'I'll kick your ass!'

I answered, 'Well, asshole, here's your chance. I'm coming over right now.'

Then I hung up and immediately called the police, saying that I lived at 34 Oaktree Blvd, in Fairfax, and that I was on my way over there to kill my gay lover.

Then I called Channel 9 News about the gang war going down in Oaktree Blvd. in Fairfax.

I quickly got into my car and headed over to Fairfax.

I got there just in time to watch two assholes beating the crap out of each other in front of six cop cars, an overhead news helicopter and surrounded by a news crew.

NOW I feel much better. Anger management really does work.

The Death of a Very Important Person
DATE: 05/05/2008 12:48:55 / MOOD: disappointed

With all the sadness and trauma going on in the world at the moment, it is worth reflecting on the death of a very important person, which almost went unnoticed last week.

Larry LaPrise, the man that wrote 'The Hokie Pokey' died peacefully at the age of 93. The most traumatic part for his family was getting him into the coffin. They put his left leg in.

And then the trouble started.

A Simple Solution to MSG Free Tacos
DATE: 04/27/2008 01:14:24 / MOOD: happy

Tacos are one of my favorite foods.  After reading the ingredients in the taco seasoning packages, I've stopped using them.

You can still make great tasting tacos without using traditional taco seasoning mixes!

What I do is cook the ground beef and chopped onions as I normally would, then instead of simmering seasoning and water, I just stir in a generous amount of salsa and simmer over a low heat.

I think you can still find some salsa without preservatives, but if not, you can always make homemade salsa as well.  (Seems like we go through a lot just to get some decent food these days!)

The truth is, it doesn't quite taste the same, but it's still tasty and I do recommend this tip for anyone who's wanting to reduce or eliminate MSG from their diet.

The People's Grocery
DATE: 04/26/2008 23:12:53 / MOOD: happy

I found the following article and thought I'd share it with the group, hope you enjoy

Food riots, economic collapse, and your prosperity (VIDEO)
The economic picture - as far as what we’re seeing on the news - does not look good.

People are rioting over food shortages in developing countries,
economies are collapsing, and each of us is feeling the crunch of a
massive failure in the systems that we as humans have set up to feed
ourselves and see to it that we survive as a species.

Here at Prosperity For All 2008 we are engaging deeply in questions
about prosperity for all - what does it mean? How do we create it? And
we are operating from an unwavering commitment to be the ones who stand
for it.

At the end of this post, there are two links that I invite you to
explore, and a video that I found to be truly inspirational. I invite
your comments, feedback, and direction in terms of other places to find
more information and resources.

First, I want to share a couple more thoughts about what I see:

To me, prosperity for all is the state of being where all of the
fundamental needs for survival are met - with enough surplus for all
that each individual human being has the opportunity for
self-actualization. Imagine what life on planet earth would be like if
our combined energy as a species was focused on making life AMAZING for
all of us!

I imagine a global civilization in which every human being is involved
in some aspect of high culture - art, music, theater, film, or whatever
expression calls to their heart - and where we are so connected to the
earth as the source of our food, shelter, and groundedness in life that
our combined efforts are put toward restoration and beautification.
What would THAT world be like???

It’s easy to think that if all the rich people agreed to re-distribute
wealth equally around the world, then we could create a world like
that. But I don’t think that’s the answer.

What I see is that it is up to each of us to create our own vision of
what that world would be like, and then to go about bringing that
vision into reality - right where we stand.

Here’s an article
which describes the vulnerability of the US food supply system,
suggesting that the kinds of food riots we’re seeing in Africa and
South America are closer to our own soil than we think. When the food
at the grocery store costs too much, we can either take to the streets
and demand that someone else do something about it, or we can take
responsibility for ourselves and our future.

Here’s a perfect example of what I’m talking about. It’s a beautiful video from the Global Oneness Project
about People’s Grocery in West Oakland, California, which is offering
organic produce and the prospect of a prosperous future to a severely
depressed community. Through urban gardens and local farms, People’s
Grocery supports a culture based on connection to the land, sustainable
agricultural practices, and regenerating community.

Enjoy the video, and please post your comments!

Finally - Wildly Cherry M&m's!
DATE: 04/26/2008 04:10:42 / MOOD: happy

Woohoo!!  I finally got a bag

All that searching and keeping an eye out finally paid off.  I was starting to think I'd find the new crispy mint m&m's before I'd find a bag of these cherry ones.

When I saw it on the shelf, it was the last bag.

They're pretty tasty

The Purina Diet
DATE: 04/23/2008 12:40:48 / MOOD: full of life

A funny thing happened after work the other night...

I have a dog (Buddy) and was buying a large bag of Purina at Wal-Mart and was in line to check out.

The woman behind me asked if I had a dog?

Duh?

On impulse, I told her  no, that I was starting, The Purina Diet, again. Although I probably shouldn't because I ended up in the hospital the last time. But I'd lost 30 pounds before I awoke in an intensive care ward with tubes everywhere and IV's in both arms.

I told her that it was essentially a perfect diet and the way is to load your pockets with Purina nuggets and simply eat one or two every time you feel hungry.  The food is nutritionally complete so I was going to try it again.

I have to mentioned here that practically everyone in line was now enthralled with my story, particularly a tall guy who was standing behind her.

Horrified, she asked if I ended up in intensive care because the dog food had poisoned me? I told her no, I had  been sitting in the street licking myself and a car hit me.

I thought the guy behind her was going to need help as he staggered to the door laughing.

Fire the Chef!
DATE: 04/10/2008 13:33:10 / MOOD: don't know

Some of you in here tell some pretty horrible jokes.  I thought this was a food network site.

So my question is... when are we gonna have a horrible joke contest?

ok.. someone shared this with me, it's time to pass it on:

A man returns home from an unsuccessful gambling trip and tells his wife he had lost their entire fortune and they would have to change their lifestyle in order to save money.

"If you'll just learn to cook..." he explains, "we can fire the chef"

"Okay," She agrees, "and if you'll learn to make love, we can fire the gardener."
